Every muscle of his body – from the broad shoulders and back, through the tensed forearm, down to the hardened feet – is gathered in a single act of thought, as though all the energy of the man were transforming, in this very moment, into ideas. The face, shadowed and inscrutable, deeply inclined downward, makes the figure never meet the gaze of the viewer – it is turned inward, toward that invisible realm where thoughts, conscience, and poetry are born. The entire sculpture is handcrafted, which makes every piece truly one of a kind – subtle variations in patina, the intensity of the copper highlights upon the strained musculature, and the depth of shadow in the recesses of the body and the texture of the stone ensure that each figure carries the individual trace of the artist's hand. The surface is finished in a warm copper-bronze patina with a slightly raw, \"Rodin-like\" texture, in which deliberately rough, unpolished areas are preserved – just as in Rodin's original, where it was the very traces of the chisel and of the sculptor's finger that gave the work its life. Bright flashes upon the prominent muscles contrast with deep, almost anthracite shadows in the recesses, creating an effect of dramatic chiaroscuro worthy of an academic study. The composition itself – the figure hunched upon the rock, gazing into himself, sunk in the stillness of thought – is one of the greatest achievements of modern sculpture, and is rendered here with the deepest respect for the original.
