The warrior is clad in a full chainmail hauberk of extraordinary detail, with each link individually rendered, draped over with a surcoat marked clearly with the red cross of the Templars, and belted with a leather strap and metal buckles. His head is protected by a classic spangenhelm with a nasal guard, beneath which emerges the focused, bearded face of a weary yet unbroken warrior. The entire sculpture is handcrafted, which makes every piece truly one of a kind – subtle variations in patina, the intensity of the silvery highlights on the chainmail, the depth of shadow within the folds of the surcoat, and the warm copper tones of the axe blade ensure that each figure carries the individual trace of the artist's hand. The surface is finished in a cool, silvery-grey patina that captures perfectly the character of medieval armour and tempered steel, contrasting with the warm copper accents of the metal fittings, the buckles, and the blade of the axe. Every link of the chainmail has been worked separately – a true demonstration of craftsmanship that lends the sculpture an almost hyperrealistic quality – while the rough-textured stone base evokes the austerity of a medieval chapter house floor or the interior of a castle chapel.
